TMS has shown to be effective in reducing major depression and even psychosis. However, most clinicians use a very crude method to place their TMS coil over the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC) in case of depression treatment, or temporoparietal areas in case of psychosis treatment. For DLPFC, the 'standard method' entails that the motor cortex is first located by looking for the region on the scalp where thumb movements can be evoked with TMS. The coil is then moved 5 cm rostrally in a parasagittal plane. This point is then used for the TMS treatment.
